Fishing Report for 5/4/2007 - Our First Trip for Southeast Alaska Steelhead!

Departing Sitka in a winter like scene we sat out on a three week “Steelhead expedition” working our way threw the inside passage with plans to hit some favorite spots and maybe even new prospects. Stopping both in Juneau and Petersburg to provision and switch crews, thus far we have had one of the best Steelhead seasons on record!

Southeast Alaska Steelhead

Although most of our time was spent up the streams, we did take the time to do a little bottom fishing. Eric was happy when he landed his biggest Halibut ever at 65 pounds! Everyone had the chance to land a good size Snapper, which Rooster quickly transformed into unbelievable fish sandwiches!

Adventurous off-road vehicle!

Joining us last week was fist time guest Betsy and Larry Best. The Best were joined by returning guest Pete Edgecomb, Pete's fishing Buddy Eric Pederson, Robert Boyce from Yellow Dog fly fishing, and guest Steelhead expert, Dan "Rooster" Leavens from the Four Rivers Fishing Company.

Travis and Larry with a Big Steelhead!

Fishing four streams over six days the crew had the chance to see diversity in fishing, weather and stream characteristics. Beginning on the mainland coast the record winter snow fall was more than evident and although we found the streams with perfect flow the banks were stacked with up to 10 feet of snow! The crew hung in and managed to make some great catches on the first two days! As the trip progressed we found more spring like conditions on the islands and the streams loaded with good numbers of Steelhead! Fly fishing exclusively, the last day we had an absolutely world class day when the crew hooked over 30 steelhead, and landed over a dozen including one triple hookup and two doubles! Pete had the fish of the week estimated over twenty pounds! Larry also tangled with a fresh, feisty buck estimated over 17 pounds.

As always aboard the Adventurous fishing was just a part of another sensational Alaska Adventure! Thanks to last weeks guest for making the beginning of the 2007 Alaska Charter Service season more memorable than ever!
